In the District Court, Sony prevailed as to both contributory and vicarious liability. The jury found in favor of Sony on both theories. 464 F. Supp. 3d 795, 807–808 (ED Va. 2020). It also found that Cox's infringement was willful, awarding $1 billion in statutory damages. Ibid. The District Court denied Cox's post-trial motion for judgment as a matter of law in relevant part. Id., at 847.
