Despite these crucial observations, the majority forges ahead, insisting on grafting a habeas-based restriction onto the compassionate-release remedy. It gets there in two ways: first, by overstating the significance of the BOP's role in order to bolster the conclusion that “personal circumstances” are the only cognizable factors under § 3582(c)(1)(A); and, second, by overreading two of our prior habeas- channeling cases—Preiser v. Rodriguez, 411 U. S. 475 (1973), and Gonzalez v. Crosby, 545 U. S. 524 (2005). Neither move is availing.
