In Hain's view, the correctness of the District Court's dismissal is irrelevant because, like in Caterpillar, the parties were completely diverse by the time of final judgment. Hain is mistaken. This Court has never held that a district court can create jurisdiction through its own mistakes. A rule to the contrary would permit courts to enlarge their jurisdiction beyond the limits Congress imposed. Cf. Kok konen v. Guardian Life Ins. Co. of America, 511 U. S. 375, 377 (1994) (“Federal courts . . . possess only that power authorized by Constitution and statute, which is not to be expanded by judicial decree” (citations omitted)).
