Enbridgeowns and operates the 645-mile-long Line 5 pipeline, which runs from northwestern Wisconsin through Michigan and into Canada. Line 5 is part of a pipeline network that transports petroleum products to refneries across the Midwestern United States, Ontario, and Quebec. Between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, a 4-mile strip of Line 5 traverses the Straits of Mackinac pursuant to a 1953 easement granted to Enbridge's predecessor by the State of Michigan, which has long owned the Strait's bottomlands.
