The Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment constitutionalized the Civil Rights Act’s citizenship provision. The “main object” of the Clause was to settle “the citizenship of freed [slaves].” Elk, 112 U. S., at 101. In full, the Citizenship Clause provided:
