In Calvin’s Case, the question was whether a man born in Scotland was a subject of King James I of England, who acceded to the thrones of both Scotland and England before the man’s birth. Id., at 2a, 77 Eng. Rep., at 379. In a famous speech to Parliament, James I forcefully explained his views about the source of his authority and his relationship with his subjects.
