The Presidential Eligibility Clause, Art. II, §1, cl. 5, had a similar aim, but it went even further. Not only does it require 14 years’ residence, it also requires that a President be a citizen from birth. Its purpose was to prevent a person with possible foreign loyalties from becoming President, and the British rule hardly seems consistent with that aim.
