The trial judge instructed the jury that Martin could be found guilty if he had “ `aided' ” or “ `encouraged' ” the attempted murder and assault with the intent that the crime succeed. Id., at 79a. The jury found him guilty as an accessory before the fact. The court sentenced him to life in prison, and his conviction and sentence were affirmed on direct appeal. Martin, 218 Md.
